7 Easy DIY Halloween Costumes for Children

Halloween is one of the most fun and exciting holidays of the year. After all, who doesn’t like trick-or-treating, candy, and spooky stories? Of course, Halloween is all about the costumes, especially for kids but, in many cases, adults also. Which brings us to the subject of today’s article: Easy DIY Costumes for Adults and Children. If you’re in need of a quick, easy, and affordable way to haunt this year, NSA Storage has the info you need, below. It’s a list of seven DIY Halloween costumes you can make at home!

What Makes DIY Halloween Costumes Better than Store Bought?

There’s truly something special about creating your own Halloween costume. You can watch it come to life, so to speak, and make any changes, upgrades, and tweaks you like. For some, the process is as much fun as the actual trick-or-treating!

Another reason is that, in most cases, you can save quite a bit of money making your own costume. Oftentimes it can be made with materials you already have at home, cutting down on your overall costs. Lastly, making your costume with friends and family is a great way to enjoy some time together during this special holiday!

1. Chef

You can see chefs all over TV these days, including Gordon Ramsey and many others. A chef’s costume is simple using a:

  • White, button-down shirt
  • Apron
  • Large kitchen spoon, spatula, or other utensil
  • Large piece of white craft paper to make a chef’s hat

Even better, bring a mixing bowl instead of a bag or sack to store your Halloween candy!

2. Mummy

This classic Halloween costume is easy to make and is always recognizable. All you’ll need is two items:

  • White gauze from your local pharmacy
  • Tape

With white or light colored clothing underneath, wrap your head, arms, and lower legs in the gauze. Make sure to leaves gaps for your eyes, nose, and mouth so you can see and breathe. Use tape to secure the gauze. This costume is great because it doesn’t have to be perfect; in fact, the more haphazard your wrap-job is, the better! Leave some of the ends loose or sticking out to achieve that ancient mummy look.

3. Artist

If you or your child loves to draw or paint, this artist costume will be perfect! Like the rest, it’s easy to DIY, also, once you have:

  • An oversized shirt as a “smock”
  • A black or brown beret made from cardboard. (See below)
  • A “palette”
  • A large paint brush

Using a piece of cardboard from a clean box, cut out the “palette”, including finger holes to hold it. Then, paint on some “paint” in different colors. Done!

4. Garden Gnome

Garden gnomes have been a staple of American yards for decades. There are even several movies about them! Turning yourself or your child into one is easy and fun with the right materials, including:

  • A cone hat
  • Fake beard
  • Blue t-shirt
  • Large belt
  • Red pants

You can make the cone hat using a large piece of construction paper. Make the beard using white construction paper with cotton balls glued on and some string to keep it in place. Throw on the pants, shirt, and belt and your gnome will be ready to roam!

5. Bubble Bath

This DIY Halloween costume is a hoot! It’s easy and fun, and will get plenty of looks. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • Several white balloons
  • A shower cap
  • Rubber ducky
  • String
  • Tape

Buy or rent a small helium tank to blow up the balloons or get them from your local store or florist. Then, tie strings to them and attach the balloons to yourself or your child at various levels. Tape a few on with tape, also. Put on the shower cap and grab the rubber ducky and they’re ready for a bubbly and clean Halloween!

6. Superhero

With a simple cape made from a colorful towel and a paper mask, anyone can be a superhero! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Towel or piece of fabric for the cape
  • Felt or heavy paper for the mask

If you have the time and extra cash, a t-shirt with a superhero’s emblem would be a fantastic finishing touch. Or take a plain t-shirt and make your own!

7. LEGO Brick

LEGO bricks are possibly the most famous toy in the world. Becoming a LEGO brick for Halloween is easy with a large, rectangular box. You’ll need:

  • A rectangular box that is big enough for you or your child to fit inside
  • Paint
  • Extra cardboard for the LEGO “studs”

Cut out a hole for you or your child’s head and both arms. Next, paint the “brick” in whatever bright color you like. Next, cut out cardboard circles for the “studs”(a LEGO 1×4 brick has 6 of them). Place the 6 studs equidistant apart and you’ve got yourself a LEGO brick costume!

Organizing and Storing Your DIY Halloween Costumes

After the fun has ended and the costumes are no longer needed, storing them correctly is a good idea. Most folks can do that at home but, if you have several, or a lot of Halloween decorations, you might want to rent a storage unit. Whatever you do, be sure to:

  • Wash each costume well to prevent stains and keep pests away.
  • Use clear, plastic bins to store parts and accessories.
  • If you have a bunch of boxes and bins, consider using a shelving unit (or several of them) to keep your storage unit well organized.
