Long, narrow, and deep for carrots, for example, or shallow and wide for strawberries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pro Tip<\/strong>: Pre-drilling holes prevents splitting the lumber you\u2019ll be using, especially near the ends of each board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Materials List<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(4) 2\u00d710\u00d78 boards (untreated cedar or pine)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(1) 2\u00d74\u00d78 board (corner supports)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long galvanized wood screws (3\u20134 inches)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tools List<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Table saw or circular saw<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric drill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measuring tape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hardware cloth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wire cutters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy-duty staple gun<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety glasses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"step-1-cut-your-lumber\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Cut Your Lumber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut your 2\u00d710&#215;8 boards in half to make eight 4-foot boards. These will form the sides of the planter box (two stacked boards per side).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut your 2\u00d74 board into four 18-inch pieces for the corner supports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"step-2-assemble-the-planter-box\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Assemble the Planter Box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by assembling the bottom layer of your planter box. Be sure the surface is level before you begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Position one 2\u00d74 corner support inside the corner of a side board.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drill four pilot holes through the board into the support and secure it with screws.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attach the remaining boards to form a 4\u2019 \u00d7 4\u2019 square frame.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, place the remaining four 2\u00d710 boards on top of the first four, aligning the edges carefully so the boards sit flush.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pre-drill holes and screw the top four boards into the corner supports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s it. You should now have a 4\u2019 \u00d7 4\u2019 planter box that\u2019s about 18 inches deep, with sturdy corner supports holding everything together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your raised planter can be used for a variety of gardening projects anywhere you like. However, if you want to keep out rabbits and other burrowing pests, keep reading!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"rabbit-proofing-your-raised-planter-box\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rabbit-Proofing Your Raised Planter Box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut a 5\u2019 \u00d7 5\u2019 piece of <strong>hardware cloth.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lay the cloth inside your planter box, centering it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull the hardware cloth up evenly along all four sides of the planter. A 4\u2019 \u00d7 2\u2019 planter is considered a better choice because it\u2019s lighter, more stable, and easier to move. Also, a smaller planter box will fit better on a patio, deck, or in a sunroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following instructions are based on already having built a <strong>4\u2019 \u00d7 2\u2019 elevated planter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"legs-for-a-4-2-elevated-planter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Legs for a 4\u2019 \u00d7 2\u2019 Elevated Planter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Materials and Tools List<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2\u00d74 lumber for legs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\u00d74 lumber for cross supports<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One piece of \u00be-inch plywood for the planter bottom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Short wood screws<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long wood screws<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\u201d hole drill bit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric drill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"step-1-cut-your-lumber\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Cut Your Lumber<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut four pieces of 2\u00d74 to your desired leg height.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 inches is roughly desk height, but some gardeners prefer 36\u201338 inches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut four pieces of 1\u00d74 lumber to fit between the legs for cross supports. For a 2\u2019 \u00d7 4\u2019 planter, you will need two 2-foot pieces and two 4-foot pieces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut your \u00be-inch plywood into a 2\u2019 \u00d7 4\u2019 rectangle to form the bottom of the planter. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drill about 12 evenly spaced 1\u201d holes in the plywood for drainage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"step-2-attach-the-bottom-of-the-planter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Attach the Bottom of the Planter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flip the planter box upside down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use short wood screws to attach the plywood to the planter frame, aligning it evenly on all four edges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"step-3-attach-the-legs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Attach the Legs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep the planter box upside down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Position a leg at each corner and pre-drill your holes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use long wood screws to attach each leg securely to the planter frame.
